Summary

The first train station at Caledon East was built by the Hamilton & North-Western Railway in 1877 while its construction was progressing north towards Allandale. While no photos are known to exist of this station, it was one of many that followed the same standard design located in other communities. It would have been a rectangular wooden structure with a board-and-batten exterior and a bellcast roof. Just two years after the station was constructed the H&NW merged with its rival, the Northern Railway of Canada, to form the Northern and North Western Railway. By 1885 a total of five trains stopped at Caledon East on a daily basis, and just three years later the N&NW was itself acquired by the much larger Grand Trunk Railway in 1888.

For an unknown reason, the former Hamilton & North-Western station in Caledon East was replaced with a new station in 1903. This station once again followed a standard design, but this time one which belonged to the Grand Trunk. It was once again rectangular with a board-and-batten exterior, except it included a large gable above a bay window. Inside the latter contained the station agent’s office, while on either side was the waiting room and the baggage room. The rural branch line Caledon East Station was situated on never saw any substantial increase in rail traffic, and by 1908 it was reduced to four trains per day. The Grand Trunk soon encountered financial difficulties during the early 20th century, culminating in its nationalization and subsequent absorption into Canadian National in 1923.

The popularization of automobiles during the early 20th century contributed to a decline in passenger ridership, which was intensified by the conversion of several nearby stagecoach routes into the provincial highway system during the 1920’s and 1930’s. The station agent at Caledon East was removed in 1953, and by 1955 service to the station was reduced to three trains per day. It would end entirely just several years later in 1960, after which the station would sit abandoned for just over a decade. The building was dismantled in 1971 after rapidly deteriorating over the years and the property has since been returned to wilderness. The rails were ripped up in 1984 and the right-of-way was subsequently readapted into a recreational trail called the Caledon Trailway.
