Training our Turntable Operators!

Over the past few weekends, we have been training a number of our volunteers to operate the turntable as is shown in these two photos.
.
As the TRHC moves closer to opening there will be training opportunities in additional areas including that of locomotive operation for both diesel engineers and steam locomotive engineers and firemen. Progress report on today's work team results!

This week Dave, Wilson, James R., Lance, Ron and Arno joined the Saturday work team. As a result of their collective efforts - the lorry is finally done and on its wheels, we have electric light in a portion of the old machine shop, the radial arm saw is working and a good start was made in removing parts we need from the old portable miniature track. We also moved TRHA Loco #1 and #7020 off the turntable in preparation for some surveying work to be done next week.

Building A Very Unusual Railway Crossing!

A major challenge for the TRHA in the development of Roundhouse Park was the design and development of a railway crossing to allow two tracks to cross. What was unusual in our case was the fact that one of the tracks would be standard gauge (4 foot 8 1/2" gauge) and the other would be 7 1/4" gauge to accommodate our miniature railway equipment. Michael Guy designed an innovative crossing and can be seen welding it up in the picture at the left taken by Lance Gleitch. In the picture in the middle, taken by James Rasor, we see last Sunday"s crew installing the switch temporarily in the roundhouse for testing. In the picture at the right taken by Michael Guy, we see Wilson using our boxcar mover to move the Fowler boxcar and successfully test the crossing.

Steam Whistle Brewing Donates Diesel Fuel!

TRHA is pleased to thank our Toronto Railway Heritage Centre neighbours, Cam and Greg at Steam Whistle Brewing, for the generous donation of a Bio-Diesel fill-up for our workhorse locomotive, the CLC-built Whitcomb industrial switcher

Completion of Repairs to the Fowler Box Car Door!

Today, with the wood repairs complete and the steel guide shoe bolted back in place, a TRHA crew replaced the boxcar door. Dave is touching up some screw heads with red primer. The entire Fowler boxcar will eventually undergo a complete restoration to replace missing items (such as the roof walkway) and be repainted in the proper colour. In the meantime, running repairs will be made as they become necessary.

Remedial Work on the Fowler Box Car Door

Today at the roundhouse a TRHA restoration team lifted one of the doors from the Fowler boxcar for a little remedial woodwork. The middle photo shows the back of the door, generally in good shape except for the lower edge where the bolts for the steel guide shoe have rusted away and the wood has deteriorated. The righthand photo shows the two cast-iron roller brackets at the top of the door which carry a patent date of 4-30-1912.

Milton Steam Era Was a Great Success!

As mentioned in the last news item, the TRHA, working with the Toronto Live Steamers and the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers (http://www.ghls.ca/) installed the TRHA's portable miniature railway track and offered steam train and diesel riding experiences to everyone attending. Over 1,400 people rode on the train making this a very successful event. If you click on the movie above, you can experience a ride behind the Romulus 0-4-0 steam engine. The movie was made by a visitor. The movie title says that this is an 81 year old model capable of pulling 1.7 tons. In actual fact, it is a 23 year old model built in England in 1985 and pulled over 3 tons in a test run several years ago.
