The convention was sponsored by the Canadian Association of Railway Modellers and hosted by the Hamilton Convention Committee; with the participation of the Canadian railway Historical Association (CRHA) as well as the CN, CP and TH&B SIGS (Special Interest Groups) and many other devoted individuals too numerous to name. On Sunday, Derek Boles, Historian for the TRHA, brought a bus load of convention goers for an extensive tour of both Union Station and the CPR Roundhouse. Saturday, May 10th, 2008 - The Annual Railway Heritage Walk On May 16, 1853, the first passenger train steamed out of Toronto from a wooden depot located close to the eastern entrance of the present Union Station. Over the course of the next century, the railways were to have a profound impact on the city. This annual walk, led Derek Boles, the Historian of the Toronto Railway Historical Association, explored the railways' influence on downtown Toronto, with an emphasis on the Railway Lands and the old CPR John Street roundhouse. The walk covered the following sites in detail:
November 24th and 25th, 2007 TRHA was there last weekend at the Christmas Train Show, the largest annual railway themed event in the Toronto Area. Derek Boles updated our traditional display of historical pictures with a new display with both pictures from the past as well as new pictures of the exciting new developments which we have been reporting in this news column. Members of the TRHA Board were on hand to answer questions about the museum and its development plans. September 30th, 2007 On Sunday, September 30, the Toronto Railway Historical Association hosted another open house at the Don Station at Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum and Arts Centre from 12 NOON to 5 PM. The TRHA presented a display of sixty photographs inside the station. This display depicted the history of railways in the Don Valley, as well as some other facilities so as to give the little station some context. TRHA President Orin Krivel and Historian Derek Boles were in attendance and were joined by former Don Station operator John Mellow. July 1st, 2007 For the second year, the TRHA hosted an open house at the Don Station during Canada Day at Todmorden Mills. The Don Station was moved to Todmorden in 1969 and for many years has been inaccessible to visitors. On July 1, the station was open for tours from 12 NOON to 5 PM and the TRHA displayed an archival exhibit of over 50 photographs, maps and other artifacts depicting the history of railways in the Don Valley. June 23rd, 2007 The 12th annual rail fan meet at the Spring Garden footbridge, in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton Ontario. Bayview Junction is one of the most photographed locations for observing train activity in Ontario and has been written up in all the rail fan publications. The meet was an all-day event although people came come for as long as they like. It was a great opportunity to put faces with the names you see here on the internet. June 13th, 2007 TRHA historian Derek Boles conducted a special tour of Union Station exclusively for members of Heritage Toronto. While the regular tours are held on the last Saturday of every month, special tours can be arranged for groups of ten or more people. |
